I still don’t have the necessary skills and experience in putting my own business but I am very much willing to learn. In order to learn I read business books and magazine in order to learn but that will not give me skills and experience. However, because I read I learned how will I gain skills and experience in business and that is by venturing into franchising.

If you don’t know what franchising is let me quote one of the definitions I get from the Internet.

A form of business organization in which a firm which already has a successful product or service (the franchisor) enters into a continuing contractual relationship with other businesses (franchisees) operating under the franchisor’s trade name and usually with the franchisor’s guidance, in exchange for a fee.

This content can be found on the following page:

http://www.investorwords.com/2078/franchise.html

If you are like me who concerns himself about safety, you might have asked: “how safe is franchising?” While there is no guarantee that venturing int franchising will make one successful in business but I think franchising is the safest investment one can make to succed in business venture. However, there is also no guarantee that you will succeed as a franchisee.

There are a number of ways you can help yourself in making the best decision when it comes to investing in any franchising venture. Let me list some of the tips what can one do to make franchise venture safer.

1. Franchiser Growth. Steady growth growth year after year shows that franchisers management team has been implementing a well developed strategic growth plan.

Ask yourself: How quick is the franchiser growing in terms of expansion and geographical coverage?

a. Expansion. How many franchises have been opened for the past five years?

b. Geographical coverage. Is the franchisor growing locally, regionally, nationally, or internationally?

2. Franchisor Financials. The franhisor financial statement should be provided to you when you receive your franchise agreement. With this you might be needing the help of an accountant to find out the finacial stability of the franchisor.

3. Fees. Some of the franchise-related fees are initial franchise fee, royalties, and advertising fund. These fees should be examined when comparing similar franchising opportunities.

I was a scholar in a certain organization that promotes high ideals like peace, love, respect, and brotherhood. It is supposed to be a non-religious organization but I found out that they have certain “religious” beliefs. One time I heard one of their speakers told us on one of our “learning sessions” that he does not believe in hell. He went on and said that if God is love how can He send someone to Hell? If your there and you are a Christians, you know for sure that the Bible is clear on the teachings about hell. You know for sure that God sends people to hell. But can God really send someone he loves? I thought about this for a moment. I learned that what that speaker’s problem was not His disbelief in Hell but his view on who God is.

Our view on who God has an effect on how we perceive things. If you believe in a passive and uncaring God, I don’t think that you are going to pray to Him. If you look at God as something like a Ginny who fulfills all things that you wish, then you are going to pray a lot to get what you want. But if you believe in a God who desires fellowship with you because He loves you and wants you to have all the best things in the world, I believe that you will always come to God in prayer because you know that your loving God is waiting for you. Our view on who God is, really affects our actions and our attitudes. It is therefore right to learn who the God we serve is. What is God like? Let us talk about the natures and attributes of God. By attributes of God I mean the nature and character of God.

Classifying the attributes of God

Theologians over the centuries have classified the attributes of God in certain categories or criteria. That is what I am also going to do. There are many ways of classifying the attributes of God. Some would classify the attributes of God between moral and natural attributes. Some classify them according to God’s relationship with His creation—between absolute and relative attributes of God. Some theologian would classify the attributes of God to whether they are intransitive or transitive attributes. And some would classify the attributes of God between incommunicable and communicable. Incommunicable attributes of God are attributes that only God has. These are attributes of God that does not have any counterpart in the created order. Communicable attributes of God on the other hand are attributes of God that are “communicated” or shared to his creation particularly human being in limited way, that is, they have a partial counter part in human being. In classifying the attributes of God, I want to use the terms “communicable” and “incommunicable.” However, for the sake of simplicity and familiarity instead of using these terms I am going to use the terms “Unique” and “common.” In replacement for “incommunicable” I am going to use “unique” and I am going to use the word “common” to replace the term “communicable.” So when we say Unique Attributes of God these are attributes of God that God alone has and nothing in creation has these attributes. And Common Attributes are attributes of God that are in limited sense shared with the created order.

Let us now list the attributes of God that He alone has. We call these attributes “unique.” Let us provide definitions for each attribute, provide scriptural support, and provide relevant applications for each attributes.

The Unique Attributes of God

Our God is…

Eternal. Eternity means that God’s existence is not limited by time. God is timeless in his nature. By saying that God is eternal we mean that God has no beginning and no end. We measure time by seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years etc. but these do not apply to God. He is not subject to time. It is God who created time.

Supports: Genesis 21:33; Psalm 102:26-28; Isaiah 41:4; 1 Timothy 1:17

Psalm 90:2 “Before the mountains were born, Or Thou didst give birth to the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God.”

Application: God alone can provide us eternal life.

Infinite. God has no boundaries and limitations. God is not only unlimited but also illimitable. His attributes and nature has no limitations and boundaries.

Supports: Psalms. 90:2 and Job 11:7-9

Job 11:7-9

7“Can you discover the depths of God? Can you discover the limits of the Almighty?

8 “They are high as the heavens, what can you do? Deeper than Sheol, what can you know?

9 “Its measure is longer than the earth, And broader than the sea.”

Application: Would eternity be boring? I don’t think so. Eternity will not be boring because you can never exhaust the depths of God’s love, righteousness and wisdom.

Present every where. We call it the Omnipresence of God. It refers to God not being limited by space.

Support: Isaiah 66:1-2, Jeremiah 23:23-24, and Psalm 139:7-10

Psa. 139:7-10 “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”

Application:

You can pray anywhere and anytime.

You don’t have to feel lonely and isolated because God is always with us.

Self-existent. This refers to God being uncaused. God always exist.

Support: Ex. 3:14—the is-ness of God that is God always is; Gen. 1:1 – “God created the heavens and the earth”

Application:

a. God is the cause of creation. There is an effect (creation) so there must be a cause (God).

b. God is the uncaused cause.

Self-sufficient. If God is self-existent then God is also self-sufficient. By this I mean that God contains within Himself all that is required for His being God. God does not need anything outside Himself in order to exist.

Support: Isa. 40:28; Jn. 8:58; and Acts 17:25

Act 17:25 “Neither is worshiped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;”

Application:

God can not be manipulated by prayers and chants.

Occultic magic and chant is against God.

Ministering for God is a privilege. God does not need us.

Unchangeable. Theologians call this the “immutability” of God. This means that God’s natural attributes as well as His ethical commitments will never change. The attributes of God like His infinity, self-existence etc. will never change. The ethical commitments of God are His promises to us. He will bring to pass what He has promised. God never changes in His ethical commitments.

Supports: Psalm 102:25-27; Malachi 3:6; and James 1:17

Mal. 3:6 “For I the LORD change not; therefore ye, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.”

Application: What about those passages of Scripture that seem to imply that God has somehow changed? When Scripture speaks of His repenting, changing His intention, and changing His relation to sinners when they repent, we should understand that the change is not in God, but in man and in man’s relations to God but there is no change in His being, His attributes, His purpose, His motives of action, or His promises.

God is unlike anything we could imagine.

Can you imagine what God is like? For someone whose first language is not English, writing this article is hard but what is even harder to me is to imagine what God is like. I want to be honest with you; I don’t understand everything about God. I can’t imagine God’s infinity. I can’t imagine His being eternal. I can only tell what is infinity, what eternity is in relation to His attributes and other things but my logic tells that He is more than what I think. Do you think can a finite man fully understand an infinite God? I don’t think so! Job 11:7 “Can you discover the limits and bounds of the greatness and power of God?” It is a great privilege that God revealed Himself to us.

There is a type of theology called natural theology that aims to prove the existence of God and evolve the notion of God by reasoning. One of those proofs, according to those proponents of natural theology, is the consciousness of man about God. Studies in anthropology show that there is awareness within a man that God exists. The concept of God is prevalent in every human culture. Man, even long ago, has been trying to know and understand God. This is the reason man has religion. It is not just because of ignorance of man, it is because deep within himself he is looking for a creator and he wants to know who that creator is. However, can man really know God?

Can you discover the depths of God?
Can you discover the limits of the Almighty?
They are high as the heavens, what can you do?
Deeper than Sheol, what can you know?

(Job 11:7-8).

Man is finite and God is infinite. That is a problem. Man, as a finite being, can not fully grasp the concept of infinite. What we could possibly know about God is very limited. What we could know about God is not enough to know Him as He is. The good news is that God reveals himself to man.

What is Theology?

Theology is the study of God’s revelation of Himself to us. When defining what theology is most people would say that the word theology cam from two Greek words: theos which means “God” and Logos that means “Word” or “study.” Therefore theology is the study of God. But I believe that it is more than that. Theology is more than just studying God for we can not study God on our own. God has to reveal Himself so that we could know Him. Indeed He reveals Himself. In fact He has revealed not only Himself but also many other things that are spiritually true. Theology is the study of God and those things that He revealed to us. He first revealed himself to us so that we could know Him.

Types of Theology and the Theological Methods

There three types of theology. Those types are the natural theology, Biblical Theology and Systematic theology. Let’s define them one by one.

1. Natural Theology

According to Microsoft® Encarta® Encyclopedia 2002, natural theology is “learning about God from creation, using reason alone” and it aims “to prove that God exists and to evolve a notion of God by reasoning.” Microsoft® Encarta® Encyclopedia 2002 even lists the six main arguments of natural theology that prove the existence of God. Natural theology is the study of God as He is revealed in nature.

I believe that creation is one of the many means by which God reveals himself to us. However, what we could know about God through the nature and through the creation is not enough to really know a personal God. And so we need something that is beyond natural theology.

2. Biblical Theology

Biblical theology is the attempt of the theologians to base theology on the Bible alone. The Bible contains so many revelations of God about Himself and the world around us. It is therefore right to base theology on the Bible.

3. Systematic Theology

What we could know through Biblical theology can be organized into topics commonly known as doctrines. Systematic theology is therefore studying the scripture around these topics.

Those types of theology that are mentioned here can also be considered method of doing theology. We have to understand this because we have to know whether our theology is a sound theology or not. We could only have sound theology if our method of doing theology is right.

Whys is Theology important?

Our faith must be strengthened. God does not want us to be no longer ‘infants, tossed to and fro and carried about by every wind of doctrine’ (Ephesians 4:14). We live in a society that is saturated with so many beliefs that are contrary to what God has revealed in the Bible. Gods wants us to know the truth. This is the reason we have to study theology.

God wants us to help each other grow spiritually. “And this until we all come into the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full-grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;” (Ephesians 4:13).

A newly saved Christians have so many questions. How are you going to answer his questions? One of the reasons why we have to know about theology is because we have to answer the questions of those people who are still young in the Lord.

Another reason why theology is important is spiritual maturity. Rick Warren, the author of “the Purpose Driven Church,” mentioned the levels of spiritual growth. It includes knowledge of the Bible, perspective, conviction, skills, and character. It is also worth noting that those levels of spiritual maturity that Rick Warren mentioned are also the things that compose spiritual maturity. You can not become a mature Christians if you lack Biblical knowledge and perspective.

God wants us to know Him. We believe in God that reveals Himself to us. That is the very point why we have theology. He wants us to know Him. I want my sister or my mother or my mother to know me as I am because I love them. God loves us and He wants us to know Him.

How Should We Study Theology?

We should study theology prayerfully. Theology is a result of God’s revelation. Unless God reveals Himself to us, we can not know Him as He is revealed in scripture. That is why we need to be prayerful when we study theology. We need the insights that come from the power of the Holy Spirit as He moves while we study the scripture.

We should study theology with reason. Christian faith is not irrational or illogic. We have to use understanding, logic, commonsense and reason to draw conclusion from what we can know from the Bible.

We should study theology based on the Bible. Theology must be biblical. We must base our faith on the things that God revealed about Himself and the things He revealed in the Bible.

We should study theology with humbleness. True learning only comes when we are humble enough to learn from God and from our Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

God desires to be known

When I said that God is personal, I mean He is not an “it” or a “force.” And as a God, who is personal like you and me, He desires to be known and so He reveals Himself to us. Right now He is inviting us to know Him. Why don’t you respond to that invitation positively?

A Brief Description of the Major Biblical Doctrines:

Bibliology

This is the doctrines relating to the Bible itself as one of the manners of revelation to us by God.

Theology Proper

This is the study of God. While the term theology refers to the study of the general biblical world view and perspective, theology proper on the other hand refers to the more specific study of God about His character and attributes including the doctrine concerning trinity.

Anthropology

This is the study of man. It includes the origin and nature of man. It also includes study about sin and the fall.

Christology

This is the study of Christ particularly about his works, person and nature.

Soteriology

This is the study of salvation. This includes God’s plan of salvation, justification, regeneration and sanctification.

Ecclesiology

This is a study of the church. It includes the nature of the church and its organization.

Eschatology

This is a study of end times. This doctrine is concerned with the resurrection; the second coming of Christ; heaven and hell.

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17

The Bible is also known as the Word of God. When one person mentions that he read the Word of God, we immediately think of the Bible. But, what does it mean when we said that the Bible is the Word of God? We call it the Word of God because we believe that it came from God. This does not mean that Bible came from the Heavens and people just saw it shining, descending from above. Or while God was talking about events that had happened, His words became the Bible. It is not the case with the Bible. What we believe is that the God inspired (out-breath) the Bible that resulted in writing of the Scripture making it the very word of God. Let us talk about the inspiration of the Scripture and its inerrancy.

Inspiration Defined

I asked several people how they would define inspiration. They told me about being inspired to write a poem or a song, and being inspired by a movie. But this is not the inspiration we are talking about in reference to the Bible. That is how we understand inspiration in colloquial sense but in theological sense inspiration is the out-breathing of God that resulted in writing the Scriptures making it the very word of God. It was written by many people in different times, but there is only one divine author behind this many books—God.

The Inspiration of the Scriptures

Paul said in 2 Timothy 3:16a that “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God.” This verse tells that it is the Scripture that is inspired not the writers. The Scriptures is the Word of God not because of the writers but because of the fact that the scriptures themselves were inspired. The verse also tells that every portion of the Scriptures is inspired. It means that not a part of the scriptures is inspired and the other is not.

Verbal, Plenary Inspiration

Evangelicals believe in the verbal and plenary inspiration. By verbal inspiration we mean that the language of the Scripture including the words, grammar and syntax used is the result of Inspiration. By plenary inspiration, we mean that all of the scripture is inspired. That is every single part of it is completely inspired. Jesus said in Mat 5:18 “For positively, I say to you, until the heaven and the earth pass away, by no means shall one iota [i.e., the smallest letter of the Greek alphabet] or one tittle [i.e., a stroke of a letter] pass away from the Law, until all [things] happen. (ALT)”

The Mechanics of Inspiration

Let us examine two passages that could help us in understanding the process of inspiration. Those two passages are found in 2 Peter 1:20-21 and 1 Corinthians 2:12-13.

“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture is of any private interpretation.

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” 2 Peter 1:20-21

This verse tells that the Scriptures were human writers that were moved by the Holy Spirit. It tells that the Scriptures were written by human, it is not ultimately written by human alone. By this I mean that whatever it is that can be found in Scriptures, those were not made up by the writers. They did not come up with it on their own. They wrote it as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. This tells us that no dictation happened. God was able to use their experiences; their vocabulary and grammar as well as their thought process and writing style but the Scripture still contained what God had purposed.

“But we received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us by God. Which things also we speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Spirit teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” 1 Corinthians 2:12-13 (RV)

The passages tell us that one of the reasons why we received the Holy Spirit is so that “might know the things that are freely given to us by God.” Add this truth to the truth found in verse 13 in which Paul said that the words they spoke were words taught by the Spirit. It shows us that it is God that gives the revelation including the knowledge and the concept but it is also the Holy Spirit that gave them the words by which to articulate them.

The Inerrancy of Scripture

Inerrancy of the scripture is about the truthfulness of the Word of God. By definition, inerrancy means that whatever the scripture affirmed to be true is true. It means that the scripture is true and that it is free from error. One person should accept this as truth because if the Scripture is indeed the Word of God then it is really inspired and inerrant.

THE BIBLE’S AUTHORITY AND POWER IN OUR LIVES

Think of what God can accomplish in our lives through the Bible. Paul said in 2 Timothy 3:16b and verse 17 that the Scriptures are “profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” The very reason why the scripture can change us is because the Bible is inspired by God. Think about that! Only an inspired Word of God can change us into someone that is matured in God and is “thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” The passage also implies that the Word of God is authoritative for our lives because it can be used for “doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” Think about this: if the Scriptures were not really inerrant then it is not really authoritative, and it can not be used for doctrines, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness. You have seen people who were changed by the truths of the Bible. And today the Bible still have that effect in the lives of people. You can tell on your own that the Bible is really inspired and inerrant as well fully authoritative for our lives, faith and practices.

For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. (1 Corinthians 2:10).

In order to know something, Man uses his senses, his reason and his commonsense. But the Bible said in 1 Corinthians 2:9 that there are “Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, And which have not entered the heart of man.” It means that there are things that cannot be know by mankind by his reason alone or by his senses alone. And Paul said in verse 10 that these things can only be known by God’s revelation through the Holy Spirit. These things, in order to be known by mankind, must be revealed by God. This process is what we call revelation.

The Meaning of Revelation

Dictionaries would define revelation as “the revealing of something previously hidden or secret.” The same definition would apply if you consider the Hebrew word (galah) and the Greek word (apokalupto) of the word revelation. It means “to uncover that was hidden.” In theology, the word revelation means the manner in which God made Himself known to mankind. By this I mean that revelation is foremost an act of God. Revelation is an act of God in which lay himself bare before us.

Forms of Revelation

There are two general forms of revelation. The first one is General revelation and second is the special revelation.

General revelation is the revelation of God to all people at all times. This means that wherever you are, at what whatever time you may be, and whoever you are you have this revelation. This revelation is available to all mankind through the created order and through man’s conscience. Romans chapters 1 and 2 talk about how God reveals Himself to us through the creation and through man’s conscience.

God also reveals Himself to us through our conscience. Rom 2:14-15 said “(for when Gentiles that have not the law do by nature the things of the law, these, not having the law, are the law unto themselves; in that they show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness therewith, and their thoughts one with another accusing or else excusing them);” There is a law that is written in the hearts of everyone. We call that conscience, the moral sensibility of man. We have this natural moral sensibility that tells us whether what we are doing is right or wrong. This is the law written in our hearts. God wrote it in your heart. Our conscience reveals a holy God.

God reveals Himself to all people at all times trough creation. Rom 1:20 said “For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity; that they may be without excuse:” General revelation is sometimes called “natural” revelation. It is not because it comes to us naturally but because one of the avenues of general revelation is the nature.

Nature can point us to a God who exists and all powerful because we know that there can be nothing that can exist apart from something that cause it to exist. There is an effect (creation) so there must be a cause (God). Creation can also point us to a God who knows everything and wise because there is a design in the universe. There is a design so there must be designer. These are just some of the things that can be known through creation. Romans chapter 1 also said that we can know God’s eternal power and divine nature through creation.

What we can know about God in general revelation is not the only things that can be known. In fact we are in need for a special revelation. Our conscience can be so darkened by our sins that we could no longer live what our conscience tells us to do. Although general revelation points us to the God who is powerful and sustainer of life, but it does not point us to a God who is loving and gracious. We can not be changed by the few things that we can know through general revelation. And lastly, as paradox as it may seem, the revelation that we can get from general revelation is enough for us to go to eternal condemnation but not enough to save us. There is a need for something more than the general revelation; we are in need for the special revelation.

I mentioned that if there an effect (creation) there must be a cause (God), you might be thinking “But what caused the God? Could there be another God who existed earlier than God and who created Him?”

The Bible (which is an example of a special revelation) tells of an uncaused cause:

Isa 43:10 “Ye are my witnesses, saith Jehovah, and my servant whom I have chosen; that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.”

This is an example of our need for a special revelation. Let us therefore examine the second form of revelation – the special revelation.

Special revelation (also called specific revelation) is the revelation of God to a specific individuals or groups of people at a specific time and place. Let us talk about the avenues of special revelation. These are personal encounter with God, mighty acts of God, the incarnate Word of God and the Word of God as given by the prophets and apostles of Christ. Let us talk about them one by one.

Personal encounter — Examples of this revelation includes God appearing as a burning bush to Moses, God talking to Abraham, and Saul’s conversion on the way to Damascus. These are revelation to a particular person as He so chooses.

Mighty Acts of God – This is a revelation that people receives when God moves in a miraculous ways and astonishing ways. Examples include the parting of Red Sea, God’s appearance to the Israelites as consuming fire on Mount Sinai and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Through Jesus Christ – Jesus said in John 14:7 “If ye had known me, ye would have known my Father also: from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.” Jesus is indeed a revelation of God since he is the manifestation of God in the flesh. Jesus performed miracles and he also preached in the midst of people. This is also the point of Hebrews 1:1-2 when it says that God “hath at the end of these days spoken unto us in his Son”

Revelation Using Human Language –God has revealed Himself to us through the use of human language and through the prophets and men of God. This revelation also includes the Bible. The Bible is the written record of God’s revelation. Let us talk about the Bible as an inspired Word of God next time.

God Can Be Known

God reveals Himself to all people. This implies that He can be known. He can be known because He had made Himself known. There is no need for us to say that God does not exist so there is nothing to know about God. God had spoken. It is impossible to deny the existence of someone talking to you.
